Rewilding at Oaksedge

At Oaksedge Sanctuary, caring for animals and caring for the land go hand in hand.

Alongside the rescue and rehabilitation work taking place across the sanctuary, we are also committed to restoring and protecting the natural environment through an ongoing rewilding project designed to support biodiversity, native wildlife and long-term ecological balance.

What was once heavily managed land is gradually being allowed to recover more naturally. Through thoughtful land management and habitat restoration, Oaksedge is becoming a place where wildlife can safely return and thrive alongside the animals in our care.

Restoring the Land

Across the sanctuary, areas are being carefully transformed to encourage healthier ecosystems and natural growth. This includes:

  • Wildflower meadow restoration

  • Protected woodland areas

  • Planting of hedgerows and over 1000 trees.

  • Wildlife feeding and support initiatives

  • More sustainable land management practices

  • Natural habitat creation for native species

  • Reduced intervention in selected areas to encourage biodiversity

A former fishing lake on the land has also been repurposed into a peaceful nature reserve, supporting local wildlife rather than recreational use.

Supporting Native Wildlife

Rewilding at Oaksedge is not only about plants and habitats - it’s about creating a safe and balanced environment for wildlife too.

The sanctuary regularly supports local foxes, badgers and a wide variety of wild birds through feeding stations, protected habitats and carefully managed natural spaces. As biodiversity improves, more species are beginning to return naturally to the land.

Birdsong, pollinators, small mammals and native wildlife are all becoming an increasingly important part of daily life at Oaksedge.

Wildflower Meadows & Pollinators

Wildflower planting plays an important role in the sanctuary’s rewilding work. Meadows filled with native flowers help provide food and shelter for bees, butterflies and pollinating insects that are essential to maintaining healthy ecosystems.

By allowing areas of the land to grow more naturally, Oaksedge is helping create spaces where wildlife can flourish again.

A Long-Term Vision

Rewilding is a gradual and ongoing process. Every season brings new growth, changes and opportunities to improve the balance between the sanctuary, the surrounding environment and the wildlife that calls it home.

Our vision is to continue creating a peaceful, sustainable sanctuary where rescued animals, native wildlife and nature can coexist together for years to come.
